The iPhone SDK will be late?

It’s looking grim. According to Business Week, the SDK is going to slip to at least March. More info once its available…

Around the iPhone blogosphere 2

Since this blog just started, I missed an interesting post about iPhone gaming from a few weeks ago.

To repeat: The iPhone Will Be a Killer Game Platform
Cult of Mac thinks that gaming on the iPhone is really going to take off after the SDK is released. They also think that if iPhone games are successful, Apple might take steps to go into the game console market and compete with Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. I don’t know about Apple making a game system, it’s pretty obvious that they don’t understand gaming when you look at the lack of PC games on the Mac. I think it’s entirely possible, but I think Apple’s gaming foray would most likely be along the lines of Direct2Drive. Allowing people to download PC and Mac games instantly.

Here are three games that I think could work extremely well on the iPhone:

  1. Civilization - Civ is one of those games that lasts a long long time, but is extremely enjoyable the whole time. If it came out on the iPhone, it could take full advantage of the iPhone’s multi-touch capability, and could be instantly paused for return later on. I’ve already got Civ for psx4all and snes4iphone, but a native version would be so much better.
  2. Lemmings - This game is one of those that stands the test of time. I’ve played Lemmings ever since I was a child and I still play DHTML Lemmings today. It’s obvious how it would work, and I have a feeling that this game would be a huge seller. (Also available for NES and SNES, so go play it now!)
  3. Fire Emblem - I fell in love with Fire Emblem before it ever even came out in America. This game is such a fun game. I love how the game mixes the genres of turn-based strategy and RPG. Your soldiers level up, develop relationships with each other, and can be killed in battle and lost forever. It’s one of those games that could easily be translated to the iPhone if Nintendo ever got its act together. I have a feeling though that we won’t ever be seeing this one because of Nintendo’s own touch gaming system.

What is the SDK?

This post is for those of you who don’t understand what it means when people talk about the iPhone SDK.

SDK stands for “software development kit,” and it’s basically the tools that people would use to make official applications and games for the iPhone. Right now, there is an unofficial development kit of sorts floating around, and that is how current unofficial applications are made.

Steve Jobs said at MacWorld that the SDK would be ready by the end of this month. With this release, many are expecting Apple to distribute official applications through the iTunes Store.

What are some iPhone games you’d like to see once the SDK launches?
Cedric Bosch over at iPhone Matters talks about some possibilities for official games once the SDK is released. He talks about the feasibility of Katamari Damacy on the iPhone, and I think it would be amazing.

iPhone games by Gameloft?
David from iPhone World describes how the CEO of Gameloft mentioned the iPhone in some of his slides at a presentation at the Game Developers Conference. This is good news for iPhone gamers.

5 tips for iPhone game developers
This post gives some interesting tips to potential iPhone game developers. My favorite one is “Remember that the iPhone abandons all traditional input methods, and you should too.” I’d hate it if every iPhone game had a traditional “buttons.” Try to play through the first level of Mario on NES and you’ll see what I mean.

Top 10 iPhone games we’d love to see
CrunchGear has a post about the top 10 iPhone games that they want to see. I think those are good, but I would also like to see some kind of MMORPG. With a handheld MMORPG, those 3 hour long delays at the airport might not seem so bad.

Hello!

First post.

Playing iPhone will be a blog about all types of gaming on the iPhone.

So if you’re already a self-made physicist with iPhysics, a classic gamer who plays Excitebike NES all day, or just a regular old non-jailbroken iPhoner waiting for official games, this is the place for you.

Welcome.
